Pulse taking
Initial Consultation

This will take longer than subsequent treatments, approximately about 1 hour 30 minutes. A detailed consultation will take place, asking questions about past and present health, your presenting conditions, lifestyle and diet and a range of other factors, such as sleeping habits. This is to enable the acupuncturist to gain a detailed insight into your whole being and to devise a personalised treatment plan.

The acupuncturist will also look at your tongue and take your pulse as these can provide useful information.

Acupuncture points will be selected according to the information given and fine needles are inserted into the body. The needles are left in for about 20 minutes and you are left to relax.

Following treatments usually last about 1 hour.

Techniques

There are a range of techniques that can be used within a treatment in order to provide the most beneficial result:

Acupuncture needles for back pain

This is inserting very fine needles into various parts of the body, sometimes in the related area or sometimes more distally. The needles are the same width as a human hair and will not cause pain like injection needles.

Cupping treatment on upper back

Glass or plastic cups are placed on the skin creating a vacuum seal in order to stimulate blood flow and clear stagnant Qi. This is useful for tense muscles.

Needle warming with moxa

Moxa is a therapeutic Chinese herb that is lit in order to apply indirect heat. It can warm and relax the muscles and help to clear meridians. It can be applied to the needles or used by hand to warm an area.

Massage to benefit the muscles

This can be used to relieve muscle tension, stimulate blood, Qi and lymph flow, unblock the meridians, relieve stiff joints, improve digestion, relive stress and encourage relaxation. It is beneficial for musculo-skeletal problems and at times, trigger point work may be undertaken.

Electroacupuncture

Electricity has been used to help healing for centuries. Illness occurs when Qi fails to flow smoothly throughout the body. When stagnation is caused, the electric current can help to move blockages and stimulate Qi. A low frequency current is run between two needles to increase blood flow, relax muscle tissue and clear stagnation. This treatment benefits painful conditions, migraine, menopause, nausea, neurological disorders and many others.

Auricular/ ear acupuncture

This stimulates acupuncture points within the ear, which hold a microsystem of the body. Usually ear seeds are placed in the ear with tape as part of the overall treatment, which can continue to administer pressure once the session is over.

Nutritional suggestions

Part of the treatment could be to offer some nutritional advice, based on the learnings of TCM, in relation to your symptoms/ condition.
